Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What's a typical lesson like?
A: We begin with a quick breath and vocal warm-up. We then explore various exercises to help you achieve your singing goals. Next, we apply these techniques to a song of your choosing. I usually accompany on piano, but, depending on the song, using a track sometimes makes more sense. We might also speak through the song to work on expression and healthy vocalism. Everything we do is focused on empowering you to tell your story through singing!

Q: How do online lessons work?
A: Using Zoom, we follow the same format as for a typical lesson. When working on a song, you'll sing along with a track played on your end (YouTube is a great resource) or a cappella.

Q: What should I bring with me?
A: The most important things to bring are your enthusiasm for singing and a willingness to experience something new! I also recommend a water bottle and your music (if I don't already have it). Recording some or all of the lesson on your phone or another device can be a great way to practice later.

Q: What ages do you work with?
A: I have successfully taught ages 6 to 76! I easily adapt my methods to the individual.

Q Can anyone learn to sing?
A: I like to say almost everyone has a BMW of a voice, but not everyone knows how to drive it. My job is to teach you how to "drive," or work/play with, your voice.

Q: Do you work with total beginners?
A: Absolutely! Having a half-decent musical ear is helpful, but I have helped people who were basically tone-deaf.

Q: How quickly should I expect improvement?
A: You will notice improvement in your first lesson! I give you practical tools to improve your singing.

Q: I have an audition soon, can you help me?
A: I'd be happy to help! In one or two lessons the song will be easier to sing and you'll feel more connected to it. I'll ensure your music is appropriately marked for the accompanist. I can also help you polish a monologue.
